Church of the Holy Martyr Vladimir, Metropolitan of Kiev and Galicia in Sviblovo
The church of the Holy Martyr Vladimir, Metropolitan of Kiev and Galicia, in Sviblovo is located at 1, building 1, Beringov passage. The Holy Martyr Metropolitan of Kiev and Galicia Vladimir (Bogoyavlensky) came from a family of a simple priest. Having received his theological education at Tambov Seminary, he graduated from Kiev Theological Academy. He taught at the seminary; in 1882, at the age of 34, he accepted the priesthood. He took the sudden death of his wife and only child from consumption (tuberculosis) as a sign from God to give all himself to the service of the Church. Father Vasily took vows with the name Vladimir. In 10 years (from 1888 to 1898), he rose from a simple bishop to Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, and in 1912 he was appointed to the metropolitan (St. Petersburg) department. In the autumn of 1917, as a result of intrigues, Metropolitan Vladimir was transferred to Kiev, where he met the revolution, which brought him a martyr’s death at the hands of the Bolsheviks, who took possession of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, where he lived. According to the testimony of his cellmate, they mocked him, strangled him with a chain from the cross, and then took him out to be shot. Abandoned by the brethren, surrounded by executioners, Vladyka Vladimir went to execution, making the sign of the cross over himself. Before his death, he prayed and blessed his murderers: “May the Lord forgive you.” His body was found mutilated with multiple stab and gunshot wounds. The relics of Metropolitan Vladimir were found in the summer of 1992 and laid in the Distant Caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. The Holy Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, by its act of April 4, 1992, beatified Metropolitan Vladimir (Bogoyavlensky) to the face of the Holy New Martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church.
