Denis Igorevich Zorin was an officer in the 247th Guards Air Assault Cossack Regiment of the 7th Guards Air Assault Division, holding the rank of Guards Senior Lieutenant. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. He was born on December 29, 1991, in the city of Surovikino, the Volgograd Region. Zorin spent his childhood in the rural settlement of Manoylin, the Kletsky district, where he finished Manoylin Secondary School in 2008. He continued his studies at Volgograd State Agrarian University, completing military training as part of his program. For a while, he worked at the company “Sady Pridonya.” In 2015, Zorin began serving on contract in the 247th Guards Air Assault Regiment of the 7th Guards Air Assault Division, based in Stavropol. He participated in the military operation in Syria, focused on combating international terrorist groups. Since February 24, 2022, Zorin was involved in the special military operation in the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. On February 26, 2022, while on a combat mission, Zorin led a column in an airborne combat vehicle (BMD) that was ambushed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Under heavy fire, he rescued the wounded driver-mechanic and carried him over 1.5 kilometers to the rear, despite intense enemy fire. Zorin then stayed behind to cover his comrades’ retreat, ordering his platoon to withdraw. Left alone, he continued to fight until he expended his last round. Surrounded, he sacrificed himself by using a grenade to prevent capture and protect his comrades. By Presidential Decree on March 31, 2022, Guards Senior Lieutenant Denis Igorevich Zorin was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation for his courage and valor in military service. On April 21, 2022, the Governor of the Volgograd Region presented the nation’s highest award to his mother at the Hall of Military and Labour Glory, where Zorin’s name was inscribed on one of the marble plaques commemorating heroes. In his memory, a commemorative plaque was installed on the building of Manoylin Secondary School in 2022, and in 2023, a street in Stavropol was named after him.
