Alexey Sergeyevich Kurganov served as the commander of the reconnaissance company in the 137th Guards Parachute Regiment of the 106th Guards Airborne Division of the Airborne Forces. He held the rank of Guards Captain and was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. He was born on May 9, 1990, in the village of Andreyevo, the Sudogodsky District, the Vladimir Region. Kurganov completed his secondary education there. In 2007, he began his service in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, enrolling as a cadet in the 1st Company of Ryazan Guards Higher Airborne Command School (RGVVDKU) named after Army General V.F. Margelov. Upon graduation in 2012, he was assigned to the 137th Guards Parachute Ryazan Order of the Red Banner Regiment of the 106th Guards Airborne Division, stationed in Ryazan. During his service, Kurganov held various positions, including commander of parachute and reconnaissance platoons and deputy company commander, demonstrating himself as a highly skilled officer. He participated in military operations in Syria starting in 2015, when Russian forces began their campaign against international terrorist groups. In 2020, he was appointed as commander of the reconnaissance company of the 137th Regiment. Since February 24, 2022, Kurganov took part in the special military operation aimed at protecting the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. He heroically fell in battle against Ukrainian nationalists on March 7, 2022. By Presidential Decree on March 31, 2022, in recognition of his courage and heroism, Guards Captain Alexey Sergeyevich Kurganov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. On April 21, 2022, the award was presented to his family at RGVVDKU named after V.F. Margelov. In 2022, a memorial plaque was established in Kurganov`s honour at the territory of the Andreyevsky Forestry, and in 2023, a commemorative plaque was unveiled on the house in Ryazan where the hero lived.
