Monument to the Frontline dog

On June 21st, 2013, in Moscow, at Poklonnaya Gora, a monument was dedicated to the front-line dogs – faithful companions of soldiers who contributed greatly to the common victory during the Great Patriotic War. This memorial has become a symbol of appreciation for the efforts of these four-legged heroes, who selflessly fought alongside humans. During the war, more than 60,000 dogs of various breeds served in various capacities. These animals carried out vital tasks, such as carrying the wounded from the battlefield, delivering ammunition and supplies, searching for and disarming enemy mines, and participating in dangerous operations. Many of these dogs sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. It is also impressive to note that in the summer of 1945, frontline dogs participated in the Victory Parade in Red Square. They demonstrated courage and discipline and became real symbols of perseverance. The sculptor, Andrey Korobtsov, created a monument depicting a dog sitting on torn tank tracks. The image was chosen with care, as it refers to the dedication of these dogs who risked their lives to destroy enemy tanks and save wounded soldiers on the battlefield. A medical bag is attached to the back of the dog, reminding us of their other important role – delivering medicine and rescuing wounded soldiers. Words reflecting the significance of the contribution made by frontline dogs during the Great Patriotic War are inscribed on the pedestal of the monument. “During the war, frontline dogs destroyed more than 300 enemy tanks, provided over 120,000 reports on enemy activity, and evacuated approximately 700,000 injured soldiers from the battlefield,” the inscription reads. These figures demonstrate the immense role played by these four-legged heroes on the front lines. The idea to commemorate the memory of these brave dogs originated with a group of veterans of the war, supported by the Russian Military Historical Society. The statue was modeled after a German Shepherd named Alf, that became a symbol of all war dogs. The original monument was later replicated, with a copy being installed in Petroverigsky Lane, Moscow, in 2018. This new location serves as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of these four-legged war heroes for all who visit and pass by.
