Church of the Icon of the Mother of God «The Sign» in Zakharyino

The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” in Zakharino has a long and complicated history, reflecting important events both in the life of the local community and in the broader context of Russian history. Originally built as a wooden church in 1648 in honour of the Nativity of Christ, the church was soon replaced by a stone one in 1672, which testifies to the development and strengthening of the Orthodox community in the area. In 1897, the church underwent significant changes: it was restored and rebuilt in the Old Russian style, designed by the famous architect A.S. Kaminsky. These transformations gave the temple its current appearance, which combines elements of traditional Russian architecture and artistic features of the late 19th century. For many years, the temple was led by outstanding personalities who left their mark on the history of the church and public life. From 1869 to 1920, the rector of the church was Archpriest Nikolai Sirotkin, a scientist and public figure who contributed to the development of spiritual education and social service. After him, in 1920-1921, the church was headed by the Holy Martyr John Chestnov, who became a victim of repression during a difficult time for the church. From 1921 to 1935 the rector was Priest Alexy Kolokolov, who, despite the harsh conditions, continued his ministry until his tragic death at the Butovo training ground in 1937. Since July 16, 1941, in the midst of the Great Patriotic War, the church was closed, and services stopped for a long time. However, thanks to the efforts of believers and clergy, the church was reopened in 1991, and prayer life was restored. In 2020, the church experienced an important event: Bishop Theophylact (Moiseev) performed the great consecration of the church, which became an important moment in the life of the parish community. This moment symbolizes the rebirth of the temple and the return of the spiritual tradition, strengthening the bond between generations of believers. Today, the church of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” in Zakharino is an important spiritual and cultural centre for local residents, and also continues its mission to preserve Orthodox traditions and strengthen faith.
