Church of the Icon of the Mother of God «Quick to Hear» in Maryino

The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Skoroposlushnitsa” in Maryino is located at 8 Marshala Rybalko St., building 2. The Icon of the Mother of God “The Quick—Hearer” (Greek: γοργοεπήκοο — “Gorgoepikoos”) is a miraculous image painted on Mount Athos and kept in the Dohiar Monastery. The icon is celebrated on November 9 (22), although in the monastery itself this day has been celebrated since 1919 on October 1 (14). The icon belongs to the type of Odigitria: the Mother of God holds the Baby in her left hand, and blesses with her right hand. The Christ child holds a scroll in his left hand. A distinctive feature of the image is the image of the Baby’s right heel facing the worshippers. On some lists, the Virgin Mary is depicted wearing a crown. The original icon, located on Mount Athos, is an almost complete image of the Mother of God with a Baby, unlike later versions such as the St. Petersburg one. The icon was probably created in 1563 and is located on the outside of the eastern wall of the refectory of the Dohiara Monastery, to the right of the entrance. Over time, the passage to the refectory was closed, and a chapel was built in front of the icon. The miraculous properties of the image were confirmed in 1664, when the monk Nile, who served as a refectory attendant, became blind due to the fact that he had blackened the icon. Leaving the lamp too close, he covered the face of the Virgin with soot. After that, Neil heard a voice forbidding him to smoke the image. Disbelieving, he left the lamp again and completely lost his sight. Realizing his mistake, the monk fell to his knees in front of the icon, begging for forgiveness. After long prayers, the Mother of God healed him, and the image was named “The Quick Listener,” which means “quick to hear.” Since then, the icon has become especially revered. Prayers before her are considered miraculous: many believers have been cured of blindness, lameness and other ailments. The image also helps in rescuing people in critical situations such as shipwrecks or captivity.
