Baptismal Church of the Most Merciful Savior in Troparyovo

The Baptismal Church of the Savior on All-Merciful in Troparevo is located at Prospekt Vernadsky, 90, p. 2. The All-Merciful Savior is an iconographic image of Jesus Christ, belonging to the Pantocrator (Almighty) type. A distinctive feature of this type of icon is the image of the Lord’s blessing hand, as well as an open or closed book or scroll. The appearance of the image of the All-Merciful Savior is associated with the 60s of the XII century, when the Principality of Vladimir was strengthening as a powerful military and political force. This icon was created in honor of a new church holiday, the establishment of which is explained in the monument of Vladimir literature – “The Legend of the victory over the Volga Bulgarians in 1164 and the feast of August 1.” The text in the manuscript is titled: “In the month of August, on the 1st day, we celebrate the All-merciful Savior and His Most Pure Mother.” It says: “If we have a favorite, brothers, we celebrate the day of God’s mercy, to our pious and faithful tsar, Prince Andrew, we are tired of celebrating it.” The mention of the “day of the mercy of God the Almighty” (“pantocrats day of the mercy of God”) indicates the iconographic type of Pantocrator. The reason for the introduction of the holiday was the victory of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky over the Volga Bulgars in 1164, an event of great national importance. In the future, icons of the Savior on All-Merciful were often associated with military events, where they acted as defenders of Russia from enemies or contributed to the victory over them.
