Fyodor Ivanovich Tolbukhin was an outstanding Soviet military leader and statesman, military commander of the Great Patriotic War, Marshal of the Soviet Union (September 12, 1944), Hero of the Soviet Union (1965, posthumously), holder of the Order of Victory. He was born on June 16, 1894. He was Russian, from white-collar workers. He was a participant of the First World War and the Civil War. Before the revolution, he held the rank of Staff Captain; during the Civil War, he was the head of the army operations department. He was in the Red Army since 1918. In August 1921, F.I. Tolbukhin was appointed as chief of staff of the troops of the Novgorod governorate, but in September 1921, he was returned to the position of chief of staff of the 56th Rifle Division. During the military operations in Karelia from December 1921, he was the head of the operation directorate of the headquarters of the troops of the Karelian Region, and after the expulsion of the Finnish detachments from the territory of the RSFSR in March 1922, he again returned to performing the duties of chief of staff of this division. For some time, he temporarily acted as commander of this division (until October 1926). Then he was sent to study. He completed the Higher Command Personnel Improvement Courses at the Military Academy of the Red Army named after M.V. Frunze in 1927 and 1929. In 1929, he trained in the position of commander of the 167th Rifle Regiment. From November 1930 to 1932, he served as chief of staff of the 1st Rifle Corps of the Leningrad Military District (LVO). In 1934, he graduated from Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze. He was a member of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) since 1938. He spoke Polish and German. During the Great Patriotic War, he was chief of staff of a number of fronts, then commander of the troops of the Southern Front (March 22, 1943 – October 20, 1943), the 4th Ukrainian Front (October 20, 1943 – May 15, 1944), and the 3rd Ukrainian Front (May 15, 1944 – June 15, 1945). He led military operations in the Battle of Stalingrad, the liberation of Ukraine, the Iasi–Kishinev Offensive, and the liberation of Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Austria. After the war, he was Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Group of Forces (1945-1947), then commander of the troops of the Transcaucasian Military District. On May 7, 1965, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 7, 1965, «for skillful leadership of troops, courage, bravery, and heroism displayed in the struggle against the German-fascist invaders during the Great Patriotic War», Marshal of the Soviet Union Fyodor Ivanovich Tolbukhin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously). For outstanding services during the Great Patriotic War, he was awarded the highest military order “Victory,” two Orders of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of Suvorov 1st Class, the Order of Kutuzov 1st Class, the Order of the Red Star, and other awards.
