Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Yasenevo

In Christian tradition, the Apostles Peter and Paul are venerated as the supreme apostles, whose exceptional contribution to the spread of the faith established their special status, reflected in the detailed accounts of the book of the “Acts of the Apostles.” The Apostle Peter, one of the twelve closest disciples of Christ, was present at the key events of the Gospel history. After the Resurrection, he headed the apostolic community and became the first Bishop of Rome, initiating the Roman episcopate, and is also the author of two New Testament epistles. Peter ended his ministry with a martyr’s death in Rome around 64 AD, being crucified upside down. The Apostle Paul, converted after an appearance of Christ to him, became a zealous preacher whose three missionary journeys through Asia Minor and Greece contributed to the founding of the first Christian communities. His theological legacy includes 14 epistles included in the New Testament canon, and his life ended in martyrdom in Rome during the Neronian persecutions. Their joint feast day is celebrated by the Church on July 12. The history of the veneration of the supreme apostles finds its continuation in the life of the church, built in 1751-1753 on the site of a wooden church dedicated to the Martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov, and their mother Sophia, which was built in 1626. After being closed in the 1930s and used for economic purposes, the church was externally restored in 1973-1976, and in 1989 it was returned to the Orthodox Church. Since 1997, the church has been the Moscow metochion of Optina Pustyn, where an active parish life is conducted: a Sunday school, choir, choreography, theater, and language studios, as well as handicraft and woodcarving circles, are active. The parish carries out catechetical work, conducts conversations about the faith, and engages in social service, providing assistance to those in need and organizing volunteer support. At the church, there is an Orthodox youth movement “Pokrov” (Intercession), which works in many areas: pilgrimage and labor activities, the “World of a Friendly Family” club, the “Pokrov” theater studio, holidays for orphaned children, and active participation in material and prayerful support for military personnel in the Special Military Operation zone. Thus, the missionary spirit of the holy apostles Peter and Paul finds its embodiment in the multifaceted activities of the modern church.
