Church of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers in Yasenevo

The Holy Royal Passion-Bearers – this is how the Russian Orthodox Church refers to the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II and his family: Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, Tsarevich Alexei, and Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia. The rank of holiness “passion-bearer” denotes a saint who accepted a martyr’s death for following God’s commandments with Christian humility and meekness, which fully reflects the feat of the royal family. In 1981, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia canonized them as martyrs, and in 2000, at the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church, they were glorified as passion-bearers as part of the Synaxis of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. The solemn rite of canonization took place on August 20, 2000, at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. The family accepted their martyrdom on the night of July 16-17, 1918, in Yekaterinburg, having refused offers to flee abroad and demonstrating an example of non-resistance and faithfulness. Their feast day is July 17. Along with the imperial family, their loyal physician, Yevgeny Botkin, who remained with them until the end, was also glorified. In memory of their martyrdom, on April 21, 2018, the centenary year of the tragic events, a temporary church was consecrated. Currently, preparations are underway for the construction of the main church complex. The church conducts active missionary and catechetical work, and a children’s educational and upbringing group operates there.
