Church of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene in Yuzhnoe Butovo

In Orthodoxy, Mary Magdalene is venerated as a holy Equal-to-the-Apostles, a title she received for preaching the Gospel, and she is considered equal in significance to the apostles in spreading Christianity. Mary Magdalene suffered from a mental affliction, but Jesus Christ cast out seven demons from her, granting her both physical and spiritual healing. She followed the Lord everywhere to hear His Divine teachings, and during Christ’s Passion, she showed greater courage and devotion than the apostles. Mary Magdalene accompanied Christ during His travels through the cities of Palestine, was present at the Crucifixion and the burial of the Savior, and it was she who first learned of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. After the Crucifixion, Mary Magdalene went to Ephesus together with the Virgin Mary to join John the Theologian, where she assisted him in his labors. In Orthodox tradition, it is believed that Mary Magdalene died in Ephesus, where she was also buried. The memory of Mary Magdalene is celebrated in the Orthodox Church on August 4 (July 22, old style) and on the third Sunday after Pascha, known as the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women. Construction of the temporary church began in 2014. The temporary church was consecrated with a lesser rite on April 23, 2016. Preparations are underway for the construction of the main church. The church carries out missionary and catechetical work.
