Memorial Stone «To the Defenders of the Motherland – residents of the villages of Medvedkovo and Saburovo, who went to the front during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945»
The memorial stone is installed in memory of the residents of the villages of Medvedkovo and Saburovo who were called up to the front during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The territory where the villages of Medvedkovo and Saburovo were located is now part of the North-Eastern Administrative District of Moscow (the Severnoye Medvedkovo and Yuzhnoye Medvedkovo districts and adjacent areas). Previously, these were suburban villages with a rich history, incorporated into Moscow in 1960. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, in all populated areas of the Soviet Union, including Medvedkovo and Saburovo, mass mobilization of men of conscription age, as well as volunteers, was carried out. Mobilization affected almost every family. Fathers, sons, brothers, and husbands went to the front. Agriculture and work in enterprises fell on the shoulders of women, the elderly, and teenagers, who also made their most important contribution to providing the army with food and ammunition. After the war, not all returned to Medvedkovo and Saburovo. The surviving front-line soldiers rebuilt the economy and raised the country from the ruins. In 1960, the villages became part of Moscow and gradually lost their rural appearance, being built up with multi-story buildings. However, the memory of the native residents of these places and their feat is preserved and passed down from year to year. The memorial stone to the Defenders of the Motherland – residents of the villages of Medvedkovo and Saburovo who went to the front during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 – has become a place where local residents, relatives of the fallen, descendants of front-line soldiers, and schoolchildren come to lay flowers and hold commemorative events, especially on Victory Day, May 9, and the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, June 22.
