Alexander Stepanovich Popov was an outstanding Russian physicist and electrical engineer who became one of the pioneers of radio communication. His work laid the foundations for modern radio and had a significant influence on the development of communication technologies. Popov was born in 1859 in the Urals and developed an interest in the natural sciences at an early age. He studied at the University of St. Petersburg, where he received a degree in physics and mathematics. After completing his studies, Popov began his career as a scientist and teacher. He soon became interested in electrical phenomena and their practical applications in communications. In 1895, Popov demonstrated his first radio receiver-a lightning detector capable of registering electrical discharges produced by lightning. The device represented one of the earliest practical attempts to receive radio signals. A year later, in 1896, he successfully transmitted a radio signal over a distance of approximately 250 metres, sending a radiogram bearing the name “Heinrich Hertz” in honour of the great German physicist. One of Popov’s most significant achievements was the practical application of radio communication. In 1900, his technology helped to rescue the battleship General-Admiral Apraksin near Gogland Island, clearly demonstrating the advantages of radio communication for maritime safety. Popov also conducted important experiments on the reflection of radio waves from various objects, laying the groundwork for the subsequent development of radar. He was not only engaged in scientific research but also actively devoted himself to teaching and the popularisation of science. By sharing his knowledge with younger generations, he helped foster growing interest in electrical engineering and physics among students. In 1954, in recognition of his achievements and contributions to science, a bust of Popov was erected on the Alley of Scientists at Moscow State University. It stands among monuments dedicated to other distinguished figures in Russian science and culture. Created by the sculptor Maria Timofeevna Litovchenko, the bust has become a cultural heritage site and a symbol of respect for Popov’s scientific legacy. Alexander Stepanovich Popov remains one of the most important figures in the history of science. His innovative spirit and determination to advance human knowledge contributed greatly to the development of radio communication. His work helped make communication more accessible and efficient, while his life and achievements continue to inspire future generations of scientists and engineers.
