Maksim Andreevich Kontsov served as the intelligence chief of the staff of the 748th Separate Operational Designation Battalion of the Eastern Military District of the National Guard of Russia. He held the rank of Lieutenant and was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. He was born on May 16, 1988, in Ulan-Ude, the Buryat ASSR (now the Republic of Buryatia). Kontsov finished Secondary School № 47 with a silver medal in 2005. Then he entered the East Siberian State University of Technology and Management. After taking an academic leave in his fifth year, he was called up for military service. Since 2010, Kontsov served his conscription in Ussuriysk (Primorsky Krai) with the separate special motorized battalion of the Eastern Regional Command of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, soon transitioning to contract service. Since 2011, he served in Khabarovsk with the 21st Special Purpose Detachment “Typhoon” of the Eastern Command of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which later became part of the National Guard of Russia (Rosgvardiya). He participated in counter-terrorism operations in the North Caucasus, eventually rising to the position of chief of the squad while holding the rank of sergeant. In 2020, he graduated with honors from the Academy of Management and Production in Moscow, specializing in management. Since June 2021, he served as the intelligence chief of the staff of the 748th Separate Operational Designation Battalion, holding the rank of Lieutenant. With the beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Kontsov took part in combat actions against the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On March 24, 2022, he led an intelligence group on a special operation aimed at destroying a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group. After locating the enemy, his group was engaged in combat, during which Kontsov personally suppressed an enemy firing position, allowing for the encirclement of enemy forces. Despite sustaining multiple injuries, he eliminated an enemy grenadier and continued to command his subordinates until he died, saving the lives of his comrades. Due to the heroic actions of Lieutenant Maksim Kontsov, the enemy sabotage group was destroyed, several saboteurs were captured, and Rosgvardiya scouts seized a large weapons and ammunition depot. By Presidential Decree on April 4, 2022, in recognition of his courage and heroism, Lieutenant Maksim Andreevich Kontsov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. On April 14, 2022, the “Gold Star” medal was presented to his family. He was buried on April 15, 2022, at the “Yuzhnoe” cemetery in Ulan-Ude. On June 12, 2024, a memorial plaque was installed in Khabarovsk in his honour at the 748th Separate Operational Designation Battalion and on December 9, 2022, a commemorative sign was placed at Secondary School № 47 in Ulan-Ude, where he studied. Additionally, a street in the new Taezhny microdistrict in Ulan-Ude was named after him in 2022.
