Church of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin in Yakovlevo

The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Yakovlevo was founded no later than the end of the XVI century, and according to some sources, its construction may date back to the XV century. For the first time, the temple was mentioned in the scribe’s book of the Moscow district of Sosenskiy camp in a deed of sale in 1592: “Roman Fyodorov, the son of Durov, bought his father’s patrimony, the village of Yakovlevo, on the river Plesenka …, and in the village the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin …” In the middle of the XVII century. the temple building was already stone, and in 1670 under the owner of the village A stone chapel in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built by the Duma nobleman Andrei Vasilyevich Tolstoy. Since December 1846, the Church of the Intercession and its clergy have been assigned to the St. Nicholas Church in the village of Kuvekino. According to the insurance assessment dated July 2, 1910, the temple was a well-preserved two-story building with a bell tower and other buildings. The inventory of 1916 indicated that the church had 33 dessiatines of hay fields (15 hectares) and 2,085 square fathoms (about 1 hectare) occupied by the cemetery. The temple remained in operation until 1932, despite repeated attempts by the authorities to close it. Local residents actively defended the church, but in 1932 it was secretly blown up. In 2001 An Orthodox community was registered in the village of Yakovlevo, which was engaged in the restoration of the temple. On October 14, 2003, on the patronal feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, the first Divine Liturgy was held in the new church building. In 2004, an iconostasis and a belfry of six bells were installed. In 2005-2006, the temple was completely painted, and on July 2, 2006, the rite of the Great Consecration took place. Since 2006, the Pokrov orphanage has been operating at the temple. A stone chapel in honor of St. Nicholas has also been built at the local cemetery.
