Church of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin in Yerino

The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is located in the village of Yerino in the Shcherbinka district of the Novomoskovsky Administrative District of Moscow, belongs to the Voznesensky Deanery of the Moscow Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and was consecrated in honor of the feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. The temple is an architectural monument of regional importance. In 1627, a stone church of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a side chapel of St. Sergius of Radonezh stood in the village of Yerino, and by 1649 a second side chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was added. It is not known what the church building looked like at that time. In December 1812, Priest John Fedorov informed Bishop Augustine of Dmitrov that the Church of the Intercession had been looted and destroyed by the French army. By 1854, the restoration and major repairs of the church were completed, and the church building acquired its current appearance. According to the inventory of 1875, there were five bells in the bell tower, the largest weighing 1,200 kg. The documents from 1910 indicate that the church was painted yellow and plastered inside. The roof, covered with iron, was painted green. Around 1929, the bell tower was dismantled, but worship services in the church continued until 1937, when Archpriest Nikolai Agafonikov, rector and dean of the Podolsk district, was arrested: shortly after his arrest, he was shot at the Butovo training ground. At the 2000 ROC Council, Archpriest Nikolai Agafonikov was canonized with the rank of holy martyr (commemorated on November 5, A.D.). In 1992, the church building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, and restoration work began. Liturgical life resumed. Today, the temple is operational and continues to serve as a spiritual center for believers.
