Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Tarasovo

The Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Tarasov is located at: Tarasovo. According to legend, young Bartholomew aspired to knowledge, but studying at a parish school was difficult for him. One day, going in search of missing horses, he met an elder in the field, praying under an oak tree. The boy approached him for a blessing and shared his sorrow. The elder blessed him and said, «From now on, God will grant you to understand writing». After this meeting, the young man easily mastered reading and immersed himself in the study of spiritual literature. Around 1328 Bartholomew’s family moved to Radonezh, and this name later became part of his name – Sergius of Radonezh. The monastic path of St. Sergius began in 1337, when he and his brother Stefan, a monk of the Pokrovsky Monastery in Khotkovo, settled in the forest on Makovets Hill. There they built a small wooden church in honor of the Holy Trinity. This event marked the beginning of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, which eventually turned into a spiritual center that attracted many people seeking solitude and prayerful peace. Sergius of Radonezh raised many students who founded dozens of monasteries throughout Russia. These monasteries became centers of Orthodoxy, contributing to the strengthening of faith and the unity of the country. St. Sergius also played an important role in the history of Russia, blessing Prince Dmitry Donskoy to fight Mamai before the Battle of Kulikovo. Russian Russian Orthodox Church venerates Sergius of Radonezh as a saint, the protector of the Russian land, mentor of the monks and the patron saint of the Russian army. He holds a special place as the patron saint of children striving for academic success. His spiritual legacy continues to inspire believers and remains an important part of Russian culture.
