Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Troparyovo, Patriarchal Compound

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, located at 76, Vernadsky Avenue, is dedicated to the memory of these outstanding followers of Christ. The Apostles Peter and Paul played a key role in spreading Christianity and are revered together for their exploits and sermons.
Saint Peter the Apostle, formerly known as Simon, was the son of Jonah the fisherman from Bethsaida of Galilee and the brother of Andrew the First-Called. It was Andrew who brought him to Christ. Peter was called by the Savior while fishing on Lake Gennisaret, and from that moment on he showed special devotion and determination in following the Lord. It was he who first confessed Jesus as the Christ, for which he received the name “Peter”, which means “Stone”. Although Peter denied Him three times on the eve of Christ’s crucifixion, he sincerely repented, and after the Resurrection, the Savior restored him to apostolic ministry. The Apostle Peter played a key role in the spread of Christianity: His sermons converted many people, and the power emanating from him was so great that even his shadow healed the sick. The Holy Apostle Paul, who originally bore the name Saul, came from the tribe of Benjamin and was born in the city of Tarsus. Having been brought up in strict Pharisaic traditions, he became a zealous persecutor of Christianity. However, the Lord appeared to him on the way to Damascus, after which Saul became blind. In Damascus, he was baptized, regained his sight, and became a zealous preacher of Christian doctrine. Since then, he was called Pavel. The Apostle Paul made several missionary journeys, establishing Christian communities in various cities of Asia Minor, including Antioch of Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra, Derbe, Philippi, Solun and Berea. He was the author of fourteen epistles, which formed the basis of the Christian faith. Both apostles ended their lives in Rome under Emperor Nero, suffering martyrdom for their faith. Peter was crucified upside down, and Paul, as a Roman citizen, had his head cut off. Their memory is celebrated on the same day, emphasizing their contribution to the formation of the Church. The laying of the foundation stone of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Troparyovo took place on September 14, 2014 as part of the “200 Program”. On June 28, 2015, a wooden church was erected and consecrated near the construction site of the main temple, where services began to be held.
