Holy Martyr John Artobolevsky

On the grounds of the legendary Timiryazev Academy, where the destinies of science and history intertwine, there is a place that many today call the spiritual heart of the university. This is the house church dedicated to the Hieromartyr John Artobolevsky not just a church, but a living memory of the tragic pages of the 20th century and a symbol of a return to one‘s roots. The fate of this church is inseparably linked to the Petrovsko-Razumovskoye estate. In 1691, through the efforts of the Naryshkin princes, a parish church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was built here. Later, with the opening of the Higher Agricultural School, it became a house church attached to the educational institution. However, in 1927 the church was closed, and in 1934 it was demolished. The last rector, Archpriest John Artobolevsky, in 1938 he suffered a martyr’s death, and in 2000 the Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a hieromartyr. In the early 2000s, faculty and students of the academy began to speak about restoring the lost spiritual tradition. With the blessing of His Holiness the Patriarch and the support of the university administration, it was decided to establish a house church – not on the site of the destroyed temple, but in the preserved building of the former fire station, just a hundred meters from the historical foundation. The consecration took place in February 2009. Today the church is attached to the church of St. Mitrophan of Voronezh in Petrovsky Park, but it lives its own full parish life. John Artobolevsky (1872-1938) was a figure of great scale and many facets. A graduate of the Moscow Theological Academy and a master of theology, from 1911 he headed the department of theology and was the rector of the Ss. Peter and Paul church at the academy. In 1924 he joined the Supreme Church Council under Patriarch Tikhon. His life is an example of an amazing combination of pastoral ministry, scholarly work, and teaching. His martyrdom became the highest testimony of his faithfulness. The church is housed in a modest, converted building, but its interior creates a prayerful atmosphere: an iconostasis with icons of saints; an icon of the Hieromartyr John Artobolevsky; especially venerated relics: a fragment of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord and reliquaries containing particles of the relics of holy saints of God. The surroundings the old estate park and the academic buildings emphasize the church‘s connection to the history of this place. Today, the church is a true spiritual center of the Timiryazevsky District. Regular services are held in Church Slavonic, spiritual and educational talks are conducted, and a Sunday school and catechetical courses operate. Clergy and parishioners actively cooperate with the administration and student organizations of the Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, and participate in university-wide and church-wide events. The main patronal feast is February 17, the commemoration day of the Hieromartyr John. The days of the Council of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church are also especially observed. The house church of the Hieromartyr John Artobolevsky is more than a place of worship. It is a bridge between past and present, a reminder that faith, loyalty, and service remain unchanging values. Here, in the shade of the age-old trees of Timiryazev Park, history comes alive in prayer, and the memory of the martyrs inspires good deeds.
