Church of Saint Blessed Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky at MGIMO

The Church of the Blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations is located at 23 Lobachevsky Street.
Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky was the son of Prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich of Pereyaslav and the grandson of Grand Duke Vsevolod Bolshoe Gnezdo. He went down in history as a talented commander, a far-sighted politician and a wise ruler. His name is associated with outstanding victories over the Western invaders: in 1240, in the battle of the mouth of the Izhora River, he defeated the Swedish army, for which he received the nickname “Nevsky”. In 1242, on Lake Peipsi, he defeated the knights of the Teutonic Order, winning an Ice Battle. He also successfully resisted Lithuanian invasions. The prince’s military successes played a crucial role in protecting Russian lands from the expansion of Western powers, and his diplomatic skills allowed him to contain the pressure of the Golden Horde, avoiding destructive raids. In the last days of his life, he accepted the schema, the highest degree of Orthodox monasticism, with the name Alexy. The veneration of Alexander Nevsky as a saint began in 1380, when his relics were found, from which, according to legend, miracles took place. In 1547, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized him as a prince. Numerous temples, monasteries and chapels have been erected in honor of Alexander Nevsky, and his image has become a symbol of valor, loyalty and defense of the Fatherland.
