Church of the Icon of the Mother of God «The Sign» in Kuntsevo

The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” in Kuntsevo is an Orthodox church of the St. George deanery of the Moscow Diocese, located in the Fili-Davydkovo district (Bolshaya Filevskaya St., 65). Built in 1744 by Alexander Naryshkin, the temple was rebuilt several times, and in the early XX century. its dilapidated building was dismantled, leaving part of the foundations and the western wall. In 1908, architect S.I. Solovyov developed a project in the style of the early Christian churches of Ravenna, and in 1913 the building was consecrated. The new church was funded by Nadezhda Soldatenkova, the widow of businessman Vasily Soldatenkov, and his son Kuzma became the first headman. There were three altars in the church: the main one in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”, the northern one – the Great Martyr Barbara, and the southern one – St. Basil the Confessor. The interior was decorated with works by N.A. Zakharov’s craftsmen, the main element was the bronze Royal Gates with enamels. In 1932, divine services stopped, the bell tower was demolished, the iconostasis was destroyed, and the building was used as a factory, ski base, and library. Priest Vasily Guryev was shot in 1937 in 1991. Restoration has begun, and the 1913 floor and facade decor elements have been preserved. In 2000, the church was consecrated by Patriarch Alexy II, and a parish house with a bell tower was built nearby. In 2002, the baptismal church in the name of St. Macarius of Moscow was consecrated.
