Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Tyoply Stan, Patriarchal Metochion

The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, one of the most revered icons in Russia, was discovered in Kazan in 1579 following a devastating fire. This miracle-working image is inextricably linked to key events in Russian history. In 1612, a copy of the icon accompanied the militia of Minin and Pozharsky, who liberated Moscow. Before the Battle of Poltava in 1709, Peter the Great prayed before it, and in 1812, the image spiritually strengthened Russian warriors in the struggle against Napoleon’s invasion. Many believers associate prayers to this icon with victories during the Great Patriotic War (World War II). In 2023, the original icon was discovered by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill in Peredelkino and solemnly returned to the Kazan Cathedral on Red Square. The Kazan Icon is venerated as a protector and helper in various needs. Believers turn to it with prayers for the protection of their families, the health of loved ones, healing from illnesses (especially eye ailments), and assistance for warriors. This image serves as a symbol of consolation and spiritual support in difficult times. Its feast days are celebrated twice a year-on July 8 and November 4. A special place of veneration for the icon is the church built in 2012-2013. The first Divine Liturgy was held here on April 7, 2013, and on December 15 of the same year, the church was consecrated with a minor rite. In 2016, a cross-a copy of the Godenovo shrine-was installed on the church. The great consecration rite was performed on April 14, 2019, by Bishop Feofilakt (Moiseev), with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. In 2020-2021, the church’s façades were adorned with sculptural images of the Savior, the Mother of God, and the Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir and Princess Olga. The parish actively conducts spiritual, educational, and social work: a Sunday School and the “Knigochei” book club operate, catechetical talks are held, and the “Vernost” youth club functions. Social ministry includes targeted assistance to those in need and meetings within the “Metanoia” addiction recovery program.
