Department «Museum of African Culture» of the State Museum of Oriental Art

The Museum of the Cultures of African Countries presents itself as a museum‑research project: a dynamic space that combines a permanent exhibition providing a foundational understanding of the continent-its history, cultures, and peoples-with long‑term rotating displays (lasting six months to a year) devoted to individual countries, themes, or collections. The museum runs an active scientific and educational programme that includes academic conferences, lectures, workshops, film screenings, and festivals of African performing and theatrical arts. One of its principal aims is to offer visitors a holistic view of Africa as a multifaceted cultural space with a long and compelling history. The museum’s main thematic sections comprise the “Timeline,” a chronology of cultural processes from antiquity to the present that highlights global connections through groups of reference objects accompanied by infographics, drawings, and maps; a zone dedicated to art and craft techniques and the materials most commonly used across the continent in the creation of fine and decorative‑applied arts; a traditional architecture zone featuring architectural models, everyday objects, and decorative‑applied works related to building traditions; and an intangible ethnocultural heritage zone, supplemented by interactive screens, multimedia projects, and AR/VR technologies, which complements the other exhibition spaces.
