Concert Hall
The Rachmaninoff Concert Hall is located in the south-western part of the capital, in Michurinsky Avenue. This is one of the main stages of the concert complex of the Moscow State Academic Philharmonic. The ‘Philharmonic Hall-2’ opened in December 2014 on the platform of the old Hall, which was built for the 1980 Olympics, as part of the complex, and was also used for artistic productions. There were performances of the Bolshoi Theatre and the Arkady Raikin Theatre; the Igor Moiseev ensemble and the Boris Eifman ballet performed there; concerts of outstanding musicians — Evgeny Svetlanov, Saulius Sondeckis, Yuri Bashmet and literary evenings were held with the participation of famous actors ― Sergei Yursky, Mikhail Kazakov, Mikhail Ulyanov. From 2002 to 2014, the building housed the State Musical Theatre. The large hall is designed for 1040 seats. When updating the decor of the foyer, elements of the architecture of the Soviet period were preserved, among which is a panel of Vladimir Zamkov, included in the register of historical and cultural monuments of the city of Moscow. From November 20 to December 7, 2014, six test acoustic concerts of different genres were held in the Sergei Rachmaninoff Hall, the audience capacity of which was limited at first. The first concert of this kind was held with the participation of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic. By the end of 2014, ten concerts had already been held in the usual normal mode. Since January 2015, concerts have been held here on a regular poster basis, but the official opening of the ‘Philharmonic-2’ was Denis Matsuev’s klaviraband in the presence of honoured guests and officials on January 17, 2015.
Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer, conductor, pianist, representative of the directions of symbolism and neo-Romanticism in academic music. He combined the principles of the St. Petersburg and Moscow schools of composition in his work (as well as a mixture of the traditions of Western European and Middle Eastern music) and created his own original style. His work is closely connected with Russian culture in general and folk song in particular. He created three operas (including «Aleko», «The Miserly Knight», «Francesca da Rimini»), three symphonies, works for orchestra, four piano concertos, rhapsodies on a theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra, choral works, numerous piano works, songs and romances.
