The Moscow Museum
of Sergei Rachmaninoff
in Bolshaya Ordynka
The Rachmaninoff Moscow Museum was established by the Rachmaninoff Society Foundation in 2023. It is located in the central part of Moscow, in Zamoskvorechye. It is also called the «Rachmaninoff House», it is located at the corner of Bolshaya Ordynka and Vtoroy Kadashevsky Lane, in a part of Moscow that is closely connected with the life of the great composer: the family, belonging to the ancient merchant family Tretyakov, lived in the future «Rachmaninoff House». Rachmaninoff was related to the Tretyakovs, whose daughter was married to his cousin, professor and friend Alexander Ziloti; Rachmaninoff himself often gave lessons to Tretyakov’s children. From the Tretyakov House, his path lay through Vtoroy Kadashevsky Lane to Sofiyskaya Embankment, where the Mariinsky Music School was located, in which Sergei Rachmaninoff taught for many years. The museum consists of seven exhibition halls where permanent exhibitions based on memorial items are featured that most fully reflect all stages of the life and work of the great Russian composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff. More than 50 concerts are held annually in the concert hall of the museum. Visitors to the museum can hear the performance of classical music on the piano, which belonged to Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer, conductor, pianist, representative of the directions of symbolism and neo-Romanticism in academic music. He combined the principles of the St. Petersburg and Moscow schools of composition in his work (as well as a mixture of the traditions of Western European and Middle Eastern music) and created his own original style. His work is closely connected with Russian culture in general and folk song in particular. He created three operas (including «Aleko», «The Miserly Knight», «Francesca da Rimini»), three symphonies, works for orchestra, four piano concertos, rhapsodies on a theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra, choral works, numerous piano works, songs and romances.
