1994-2022

Maxim Igorevich Mikhailov was the commander of a tank company in the tank battalion of the 42nd Guards Motor Rifle Division of the 58th Combined Arms Army in the Southern Military District. He held the rank of Guards Senior Lieutenant and was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. He was born on February 13, 1994, in Ulyanovsk. He was engaged in sports and music from a young age. He finished Gymnasium № 44 named after V.N. Deev, where he studied in a law class during his final two years. In 2012, he enlisted in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation as a cadet at Kazan Higher Tank Command School. After graduating in 2017, he was assigned to the Southern Military District, serving as a tank platoon commander and later as a tank company commander in the 42nd Guards Motor Rifle Division, stationed in the Chechen Republic. Since February 24, 2022, Mikhailov participated in a special military operation aimed at protecting the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. On March 3, 2022, during fierce combat on the outskirts of Melitopol in the Zaporozhje region, the tank crew under his command successfully destroyed four enemy tanks, six infantry fighting vehicles, and inflicted casualties on approximately 50 enemy soldiers. After exhausting his ammunition, Mikhailov refused to leave the battlefield, continuing to direct his unit’s fire until the enemy retreated. His professionalism and the crew’s high combat skills turned the tide of battle, delivering significant losses to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Tragically, during an engagement with Ukrainian forces on March 24, 2022, he was killed by an enemy tank shell. By a decree of the President of the Russian Federation (classified) dated June 1, 2022, for his courage and heroism displayed while fulfilling his military duty, Guards Senior Lieutenant Maxim Igorevich Mikhailov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. The “Golden Star” medal of the Hero was presented to his family on June 10, 2022, in Krasnodar by Vladimir V. Ustinov, the authorized representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Southern Federal District. In Ulyanovsk, his memory is honoured with a memorial plaque at Gymnasium № 44, which was unveiled in tribute to four alumni who lost their lives in various armed conflicts. A new street in the Zavolzhsky district of Ulyanovsk was also named after Mikhailov.
