Sergey Vladimirovich Sukharev was the commander of the 331st Guards Parachute Regiment, part of the 98th Guards Airborne Division of the Russian Airborne Forces, and held the rank of Guards Colonel. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. He was born on March 13, 1981, in the village of Igoshino, the Yermishinsky District, the Ryazan Region. He finished Yermishino Secondary School. In 1999, he entered Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School named after Army General V.F. Margelov and completed his studies in 2004. After graduation, Sukharev was assigned to the 104th Guards Air Assault Regiment of the 76th Guards Airborne Division, where he advanced from platoon commander to the commander of the 1st Air Assault Battalion. In 2008 he participated in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict and in 2014 in the operation to return the Crimea to the Russian Federation. In 2016, Sukharev graduated from the Combined Arms Academy of the Russian Armed Forces. Between 2016 and 2017, he served as deputy commander of the 104th Guards Air Assault Regiment and then, from 2017 to 2021, as deputy commander of the 31st Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade. In August 2021, he became the commander of the 331st Guards Parachute Regiment, Kostroma, part of the distinguished 98th Guards Airborne Division. Sergey Sukharev also took part in Russia’s military operation in Syria, countering international terrorist groups. In January 2022, he led a unit deployed to Kazakhstan as part of the Collective Security Treaty Organization mission, where he ensured the security of the Almaty Thermal Power Plant for ten days. Since February 24, 2022, Sukharev’s regiment actively participated in Russian forces’ advance towards Kiev. On March 15, his convoy of armored vehicles approached the Hostomel airfield, a strategic target. However, enemy reinforcements soon arrived, damaging several of their vehicles, including Sukharev’s. Forced into a defensive position, they took cover and engaged in firefights. Assessing the situation, Colonel Sukharev decided to lead an assault against the opposing forces. Leading his soldiers in the charge, he heroically lost his life during the offensive. By decree of the President of the Russian Federation in March 2022, Guards Colonel Sergey Vladimirovich Sukharev was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation for his courage and bravery in the line of duty. The “Gold Star” medal was presented to his family on March 22, 2022, in Ryazan by Deputy Defence Minister of the Russian Federation, Colonel General Y.E. Sadovenko. Colonel Sukharev was honoured with numerous awards, including the Suvorov and Zhukov Medals. In 2022, his name was given to Yermishino Secondary School, where a commemorative plaque was installed. Additionally, an express train operating between Moscow and Ryazan was named in his honour.
