Monument to military sailors who died in the Battle of Moscow in 1941-1942
On May 28th, 2021, a memorial to the military sailors who lost their lives in the Battle of Moscow during the years 1941-1942 was unveiled at Poklonnaya Gora in Moscow, on the premises of the Victory Museum. This memorial was created at the initiative of the Russian Veterans’ Foundation, veteran organizations from the Navy and the Russian Border Guards. The sculptor who created the memorial is Hrant Gharibyan, a member of the Moscow Union of Artists. The three-meter bronze sculpture honors the courage and fearlessness of these brave sailors. And to the heroism of the sailors, who made a significant contribution to the victory during the most difficult period of the defense of the capital, more than 12,000 Red Navy men, petty officers, cadets, and commanders participated in the Battle of Moscow. Seven naval rifle brigades and a special artillery group of the Navy were also formed. The monument is mounted on a pedestal decorated with granite steps and parapets, and two inclined granite slabs with boat anchors are fixed at the base. On the front side, there is a bronze plaque with the inscription “To the military sailors who died in the Battle of Moscow in 1941-1942”. On the backside of the monument are the names of the organizations that were involved in its creation, the name of the artist, and the date of its installation. Nearby, there is an information plaque with historical information about the role of military sailors in protecting the capital. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Rear Admiral Levon Gharibyan, Admiral Innokenty Naletov, the chairman of the Moscow City Council of Veterans, Georgy Pashkov, the sculptor Hrant Gharibyan, veterans, border guards, government officials, and members of the art community. During the event, a flag was raised on the river artillery boat “Bumblebee”, and the students from the Naval Cadet Class took the oath at the foot of the new monument in a solemn ceremony. The feat of sailors during the battle for Moscow became a part of the epic resistance to fascism, demonstrating the indomitable strength and unity of the Soviet people. Their sacrifice saved the capital. Therefore, the hope for liberating the country remains. Today, this monument stands as a reminder that freedom, peace, and prosperity are achieved through the heroic efforts of those who stand up for their country. The monument is not only a symbol of the courage and bravery of sailors, but also of the unwavering unity of the people who believe in victory. It commemorates the sacrifices of those who defended their homeland, fighting with their lives at the outskirts of Moscow. Their names are inscribed in history, serving as an inspiration for future generations. These heroes are sailors who exemplify true patriotism and selfless love for their country, willing to give everything to protect it.
