Monument «We were together in the fight against fascism»
The Memorial of Glory, symbolizing the inviolability of the monuments of soldiers who fell in the Great Patriotic War, was opened on December 21, 2010. The ceremony was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and foreign guests. There is a sculptural composition depicting soldiers Mikhail Egorov and Meliton Kantaria, who are setting the Victory Banner over the Reichstag, in the foreground. A little lower, on the side bas-reliefs, Soviet soldiers are depicted throwing Nazi banners to the Kremlin walls, as well as jubilant soldiers. There is a stele similar to the “Memorial of Glory” blown up on December 19, 2009 in Kutaisi, and 15 granite cubes, in the background. These cubes contain images of iconic monuments dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, installed in the cities of the former Soviet republics. The project was carried out by the team of authors, which included the People’s Artist of Russia Salavat Shcherbakov and the People’s Artist of Russia Andrey Kovalchuk. They are also the authors of other memorial compositions installed in Victory Park, including a monument to internationalist soldiers (2004), a sculpture composition to the heroes of the First World War (2014), a monument to participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident (2017). The area of this architectural memorial complex is about one thousand square meters, and the height of the monument together with the pedestal is 14.5 meters. The memorial was commissioned by the Historical Heritage Foundation for the Promotion and Restoration of Monuments to the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War. 6235 citizens and 317 public organizations made their charitable contributions to the construction of the monument. The Union of Georgians in Russia took an active part in fundraising.
