Bulgakov

Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov was a novelist, doctor, playwright, theater director and actor. He is the author of novels, novellas, short stories, plays, screenplays and feuilletons. He was born on May 15, 1891 in the family of Afanasy Ivanovich Bulgakov, associate professor of the Kiev Theological Academy, and Varvara Mikhailovna. The Bulgakov family had seven children. In 1909, M.A. Bulgakov successfully completed his studies at the First Kiev Gymnasium and decided to devote his life to healing, enrolling at the medical Faculty of Kiev University. In 1917. He came to Moscow, where he temporarily settled with his uncle, a prominent Moscow gynecologist N. M. Pokrovsky, who later became the prototype of Professor Preobrazhensky from the famous story “The Heart of a Dog”. Then, in the spring of 1918, M.A. Bulgakov returned to Kiev, starting a private medical practice. At the end of September 1921, Bulgakov began to cooperate with Moscow newspapers and magazines. During this period, from 1922 to 1926, the Gudok newspaper published more than 120 works by Mikhail Bulgakov, including reports, essays and feuilletons. By his active literary activity, he has earned the recognition and respect of readers and critics. Since October 1926, the play “The Days of the Turbins” has been successfully presented at the Moscow Art Theater. Also during this period, at the end of October 1926, the Vakhtangov Theater hosted the successful premiere of the play based on the play “Zoikin’s Apartment”. However, in 1939, when M.A. Bulgakov was working on the libretto “Rachel”, his health deteriorated. Doctors diagnosed hypertensive nephrosclerosis, and the writer himself, losing his eyesight, began to dictate the last lines of his great work, the novel “The Master and Margarita”. Since February 1940 Friends and relatives alternately attended the bedside of Mikhail Bulgakov, whose life faded away on March 10, 1940. A monument has been erected in memory of the great writer on Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street in Moscow.
