Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in Oznobishinо

The village of Oznobishino, located approximately 8 km from the centre of Podolsk, has an ancient history. A settlement existed on this site as early as the beginning of the 12th century, and by the 14th-15th centuries, a church likely already stood here. The first written records date back to 1629, mentioning a wooden Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin with a side chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas. In 1676, Tsar Fyodor Alekseyevich permitted his close boyar, Bogdan Khitrovo, to purchase the village. Already in 1677, Khitrovo built a new wooden church on a stone foundation with a bell tower. For this church, the icon painters of the Armory Chamber, Simon Ushakov and Nikita Pavlovets, created the icon «The Holy Trinity (Old Testament)» (1677), and the «salaried icon painter» Fyodor Zubov painted the icon «St. Nicholas of Myra». These icons are now housed in the Kolomenskoye Museum. The wooden church remained active, according to some sources, until 1930, and was dismantled in 1935-1937. Some of the icons were saved and transferred to the Kolomenskoye Museum in 1935. The stone church that has survived to this day was built in the 1860s on the initiative of the local priest Alexei Belyaev, funded by parishioners. Permission for construction was signed by Metropolitan Filaret (Drozdov) of Moscow and Kolomna in July 1863, and the foundation was laid on August 11 of the same year. The project’s author was the architect Nikolai Finisov. In 1908-1911, according to the design of the architect N.N. Blagoveshchensky, a narthex with a tall bell tower was added to the church with the active participation of the local merchant Lapshin. From 1889, the rector of the church was Priest Dmitry Belyaev, who served here for over 30 years. After the revolution, the church remained active until 1937. In 1991, an Orthodox community was registered in Oznobishino, and the church was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church, becoming affiliated with the Dormition Church in the settlement of Shchapovo. The initial restoration work was carried out by the rector of the Dormition Church, Priest Georgy Evarestov.
