Monument of wildlife «Leonovsky oak»

The Garden of the Future Park is located in Moscow, in the Rostokino district, on the northern bank of the Yauza River. It is situated on the site of the former Leonovo estate, which belonged to the Princes Khovansky in the 17th-18th centuries. The park received its name in 2003 in honor of the International Exhibition of Youth and Scientific-Technical Projects “EXPO-Science 2003.” Some features of the park: area – 18 hectares, status – a cultural heritage site of the peoples of the Russian Federation of regional significance. Fragments of linden alleys and individual oak trees, which are remnants of the manor park, have been preserved in the park. In 2017, the park was completely renovated: children’s playgrounds with musical elements (metallophones and drums) appeared, a workout area with exercise equipment, a volleyball and badminton court, bike paths, a wooden gazebo with hanging cocoon chairs, a coworking area with gazebos, and Leonovsky Pond was cleaned and new plants were planted. Next to the park is the Church of the Deposition of the Robe of the Most Holy Theotokos, built in 1722. The 300-year-old oak (Leonovsky Oak) is one of the park’s main attractions. According to legend, this oak is about 300 years old, and it is one of the oldest trees in Moscow. Since 2011, the oak has been included in the register of old-growth trees of the all-Russian program “Trees – Living Nature Monuments,” and in 2022 it received the status of “Living Nature Monument.” Characteristics of the oak: age – about 300 years (in 2015, the oak was examined by specialists from the Center for Tree Expertise of NPSA “ZDOROVY LES” and the exact age of the tree was determined to be 152 years), trunk diameter – 120 cm, height – 23 m. To increase the viability of the oak, a set of maintenance works was carried out in 2022: sanitary pruning, treatment of hollows, loosening of compacted soil around the tree trunk, and installation of fencing to reduce anthropogenic load. Special monitoring and condition control are established for the tree (carried out not only by the park’s dendrologist but also by invited specialists), and sanitary pruning is performed annually. The park is open 24/7, admission is free.
