Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker was born into a family of deeply religious Theophanes and Nonna. He was not interested in children’s games or idle chatter; he was very fond of reading, praying and fasting. From an early age, Nicholas studied the Divine Scriptures with amazing zeal and did not leave the temple for a long time, praying diligently and learning about God. Nicholas’ uncle, being a bishop and watching over his nephew, elevated Nicholas to the rank of priest, making him his assistant and instructing him to speak teachings to the flock. Staying in unceasing prayer, Nicholas showed great mercy to the flock, came to the aid of the suffering. Unlike many saints, Nicholas was not a hermit, but was always among people, helping them. So, Nicholas saved one person from a great sin. Having three adult daughters, the desperate father plotted to give them up for fornication to save them from hunger. Saint Nicholas secretly threw three bags of gold through his window at night and thereby saved the family from falling and spiritual ruin. Saint Nicholas saved entire cities from starvation, rescued the unjustly convicted from prison and saved them from execution, reconciled enemies, healed the seriously ill, took care of orphans. He lived to a very old age, and his body remained incorruptible after death. In the Orthodox faith, Nicholas the Wonderworker is the most revered saint. Believers turn to him for healing from diseases, help in a difficult life situation and family preservation.
