Temple-Chapel of the Archangel Gabriel in the Staromarkovskoe cemetery
The church-chapel of the Archangel Gabriel at the Staro-Markovsky cemetery is located at territory 124a, building 2, Dmitrovskoye highway and is named in honor of the Archangel Gabriel. The Holy Archangel Gabriel is a servant of Divine Omnipotence, one of the seven main Angels who, according to the book of Tobit, “bring the prayers of the saints and enter before the glory of the Holy One”. The Archangel Gabriel was chosen by the Lord in order to proclaim to the Virgin Mary, and with Her to all people, the great joy of the Incarnation of the Son of God. He appeared to Saint Joseph the Betrothed in a dream to reveal the same great secret, warned about Herod’s plans and ordered him to flee to Egypt with the Infant and the Virgin. The archangel appeared to the righteous Anna with the news of the birth of the Virgin Mary from her, and then stayed with the holy Maiden Mary in the Jerusalem temple and guarded Her throughout her earthly life. He also appeared to the priest Zachariah, predicting the birth of the Forerunner of the Lord, John the Baptist. When the Lord prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane before His sufferings to a bloody sweat, according to church Tradition, the Archangel Gabriel was sent from heaven to strengthen Him. The myrrh-bearing wives heard from the Archangel the joyful news of the Resurrection of Christ. On July 13 (26), the Cathedral of the Archangel Gabriel is celebrated in the Orthodox Church with a six-day divine service. On icons, the archangel Gabriel is often depicted with a blooming branch of paradise or a lily. There are also images with a spherical mirror in hand, and sometimes with a candle inside the lamp. The Archangel Gabriel is often depicted on the north doors of the iconostasis. He is one of the shield holders on the Coat of Arms of the Russian Empire.
