Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God in the village of Arkhangelskoye-Tyurikovo

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Arkhangelskoe-Tyurikovo is an Orthodox church in the Northern district of Moscow. It belongs to the Sergievsky Deanery of the Moscow Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is located in Archangelo-Tyurikovsky lane. The history of Arkhangelskoe-Tyurikovo Estate dates back to the XV century, when the Moscow boyar Fyodor Dmitrievich Vsevolozh, the brother of a prominent nobleman at the courts of Vasily I and Vasily II, built a village manor house surrounded by peasant courtyards near the road from Moscow to Dmitrov. The village was named Tyurikovo, after Fyodor Dmitrievich’s nickname – “Turik”. Later, with the care of the owner, a temple was built here in honor of the Archangel Michael, who has been especially revered in Russia since ancient times. In the XVI century, the village belonged to Ivan Alexandrovich Rostovsky, nicknamed Loban, a direct (in the 19th century) descendant of the first Russian sovereign, Varangian Rurik, and then to representatives of noble families Peter and Nikita Godunov, Ivan and Bogdan Saburov. At a difficult time for the country called Disturbances, Arkhangelskoe-Tyurikovo was devastated, and the church was burned. In 1812, during the invasion of the French, the temple was devastated: “Robbed by the enemy: the church utensils and sacristy …” In the 1830s of the 19th century, a manor ensemble was created around the temple by the care of the owner of Arkhangelskoe-Tyurikovo merchant and philanthropist Susanna Filippovna Dolgova. The manor house was being built, new office premises were being renovated and erected, and the manor park was being broken up. After the events of 1917, the temple continued to operate. Moreover, through the efforts of the church council, which since 1905 was headed by a local wealthy peasant Stepan Tikhonovich Murlykov, in 1925 the temple again ceased to be attributed and gained an independent status. In 1920 the small-land and landless peasants of the village of Altufyevo, the villages of Kozhurikha-Lupikha and Zabolotya united in a land reclamation partnership, the new village became known as Novoarkhangelskoe. In 1926 and 1927, inventories of all temple property were carried out, from which it follows that in addition to rich utensils, including those decorated with precious stones, the utensils of the looted by that time house church “Recovery of the Dead” at the St. Mary’s hospital (shelter) in Ustinsky Lane were preserved in the temple. In 1972 the filming of the serial film “Seventeen Moments of Spring” took place in the Arkhangelskoe-Tyurikovo manor Park. In the opening scene of the first series, during the passage of Max Otto von Stirlitz performed by Vyacheslav Tikhonov through the forest, the bell tower of the Assumption Church appears for a moment in the background between the trees. Here, on the shore of the manor pond, the scene of the liquidation of Agent Klaus was filmed. After the filming of the film, the old manor park was dubbed the Bavarian Forest by the locals. Restoration work by a group of enthusiasts was started in 1991. In 1992, a newly ordained priest was appointed as rector of the church (in 2023 — archpriest) Konstantin Bufeev. On April 26, 1992, at Easter, the first procession took place around the church after more than 60 years of interruption, and on August 28 of the same year, on the day of the patronal feast, the first liturgy took place, too.
