Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Pykhtino, Patriarchal Compound

Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky was born into the family of Prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich, ruler of Pereyaslavl, and was the grandson of Grand Duke Vsevolod Bolshoe Gnezdo. He became famous as an outstanding commander, a far-sighted ruler and a skilled diplomat. Alexander became most famous for his military victories. In 1240, he led the Novgorod army and defeated the Swedes in the battle of the mouth of Izhora, for which he received the nickname “Nevsky”. Two years later, in 1242, his army defeated the Knights of the Teutonic Order in the famous Battle of the Ice. In addition, he successfully resisted the Lithuanian invaders, protecting the Russian lands from their raids. However, it was not only his military prowess that distinguished Prince Alexander. He managed to build a competent diplomatic strategy in relations with the Golden Horde, which made it possible to ease pressure from the east and preserve the relative independence of the Russian principalities. Alexander Yaroslavich died in 1263, having taken monastic vows under the name Alexy before his death. He was buried in Vladimir, in the Nativity Cathedral. In 1380 his local veneration as a saint began, as, according to legend, his relics were found, from which miracles occurred. In 1547, the Russian Orthodox Church officially canonized the prince, beatified him. In Russia and around the world today, many monasteries, temples, chapels, temple chapels and other prayer places are dedicated to him. One of them, the church of the Saint Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky in Pykhtinо, is located in Moscow at 3 Letchik Gritsevets str., p. 1.
