Monument
«Vasily the Cat»

Vasily is a beloved character from a series of cartoons and books created by Alexander Kurlandsky. He’s a lazy and self-indulgent cat who loves food and music, and lives in the attic of a rich family’s house. He has a charming personality and a unique voice, which has been voiced by different actors over the years. In the books, Vasily has a mother and sister, and he often finds himself in funny situations. His catchphrase is “They feed me well here!” which he often says when he’s enjoying a delicious meal. In 2006, a small monument to Vasily was erected in Moscow in Talalikhina Street. The statue is about one metre tall and is a tribute to this beloved character. It’s a small reminder of his popularity and the joy he brings to children and adults alike. It has become popular among locals and tourists due to its uniqueness. The monument is located in a restricted area, and in order to take a photo of it, one had to wait for the right moment and approach the object carefully. The monument depicts a cat sitting on a staircase with distinctive jeans and suspenders. In its paws, it holds a sausage, and its expression resembles that of a character from an animated series. The monument does not feature a mustache, as in other similar sculptures, the mustache often fades due to passersby’s actions. The location of the monument to Vasili the Cat changes periodically. It was initially placed next to a flower garden, but is now located on a stair, corresponding to scenes from the animated series. This sculpture has become one of Moscow’s notable landmarks, evoking positive emotions among residents and reminding them of Soviet childhood cartoons.
